It's that time of year again for my annual van camping trip through Nevada and Southern Utah. I won't have much internet access while I am on the road but I will start posting again in late June.

This my final post on the soon-to-be-released documentary, 2012: The Beginning by writer/director/producer, Shannon Kring Buset. In Part One we looked at the contributions of the Mayan participants and in Part Two we looked at the contributions of the Western scholars.
In this final post I would like to take a look at the film as a whole and to offer a word or two of appreciation to the talented crew.
As I said earlier, the film was obviously done with heart and integrity -- it is completely devoid of any hype or sensationalism. Clearly it is committed to portraying the Mayan perspective on 2012 as authentically and accurately as possible. And by selecting both mainstream and non-traditional experts it shows its commitment to a balanced view of the phenomenon from the Western perspective.
This is a continuation of my review of 2012: The Beginning, an intriguing new documentary on 2012. In the previous post I focused primarily on the contribution of the Mayan participants. In this post I will cover the contribution of Western scholars, some mainstream and some "non-traditional."
At the top of the batting order is one of my all-time favorites, Geof Stray. As you may recall I previously devoted a full post to Stray's chapter in The Mystery of 2012 and I later ran a three-part review of his more recent book, Beyond 2012 -- Catastrophe or Awakening?
I recently received a "screener," or advance review copy, for 2012: The Beginning, an exceptional new documentary video that will soon be available for wider public distribution. It is a visually stunning film, one that was clearly conceived and executed with great heart and integrity.
Many of the currently available 2012-themed videos focus on the overly hyped doom-and-gloom features of the phenomenon. This one takes a decidedly refreshing and upbeat approach, but does so without getting into the more woo-woo aspects that some people decry.
According to its talented director, Shannon Kring Buset, the film:
...examines what the sacred Maya texts really say about the much-storied date of December 21, 2012. It was shot in six countries and takes viewers into the field — to the very origins of the Maya Long Count calendar — and into the lives and sacred ceremonies of leading archaeologists, scholars, shamans, and the living Maya.
